Australian Simon Taufel, a winner of five consecutive ICC Umpire of the Year awards, and Pakistan’s Aleem Dar were on Thursday appointed as the on-field officials for the World Cup finals between India and Sri Lanka on Saturday.

New Zealand’s Jeff Crowe has been named the match referee with England’s Ian Gould and Steve Davis of England being the third and fourth umpires respectively at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

The match official appointments for India vs Sri Lanka final on April 2 are as follows:

Jeff Crowe (match referee), Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar (both on-field), Ian Gould (third umpire), Steve Davis (fourth umpire).

India were desperate on Thursday to prevent their World Cup campaign from being overwhelmed by a wave of national hysteria ahead of Saturday’s final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai. The semi-final win over arch-rivals Pakistan in Mohali sparked wild late-night celebrations, dominating front pages and leading TV news bulletins.

But captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni warned against complacency. “There’ll be plenty of things happening around us, like in this game against Pakistan, but what’s important is not to get distracted. We all know what our jobs are as professional cricketers so we’ll stick to that,” insisted Dhoni.

“Sri Lanka are a very good side and they have done really well so far in the tournament.” Despite Dhoni’s pleadings, the Indian press wasn’t listening.

“After this… the Cup is a bonus,” said the headline on Mail Today which splashed a picture of the celebrating Indian team across its entire front page.

“India book Mumbai matinee,” offered the Hindustan Times front page while its sports pages opted for “We hate to lose”, before adding…”finally we have a team that embraces pressure instead of buckling under it”.

Dhoni also praised master batsman Sachin Tendulkar whose 85 runs proved crucial in the 29-run win in Mohali even if he fell short once again of making 100 international centuries.

The superstar player will get another chance on Saturday in his home city of Mumbai. “He batted really well and when he’s there he makes it really easy for the others to score because he guides them really well,” said Dhoni. “If you bat with Sachin for 15 games you have the kind of experience you’d have after 50 games.”

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara believes his team’s qualification for the final can further unite a country steadily finding its feet after the end of a decades-long civil war. “Cricket has always been the panacea that heals all in Sri Lanka, so winning the World Cup final would be huge for the country,” said Sangakarra, who praised his team’s national pride.

“There are times when there is talk of the Indian Premier League, the money involved and everything. But let me tell you, we take pride in playing for our country.”

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said the performance of his side’s younger players had been among the positives of a World Cup campaign that ended with Wednesday’s defeat at the hands of India.

And he said he hoped the game, watched by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani, would be the catalyst for more games on Indian soil.

Pakistan have been unable to play matches at home since an armed attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore in 2009. Now Afridi wants to see the restoration of normal cricket ties with India as part of his country’s sporting rehabilitation. “We want to play in India, we have shown them our hospitality in the past, I hope they do so too,” the all-rounder said.

Pakistan cricket has been under a cloud since last year’s ‘spot-fixing’ scandal in England which led to bans for new-ball duo Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif as well as former Test captain Salman Butt.

“It has been a difficult 10 months for us,” Afridi said. “I am thankful to my board officials and team management for backing me. We had a rickety team coming into the World Cup and considering that it has been a good performance.”

ICC Announces Cricket World Cup 2011 Semi Final Umpires

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the umpires for World Cup semi-final.Australia’s Simon Taufel and England’s Ian Gould will be the on-field umpires for the India and Pakistan semi-final to be palyed on Wednesday in Mohali.

New Zealand’s Billy Bowden will be the third umpire and Australian Rod Tucker the fourth umpire and Sri Lanka’s Ranjan Madugalle will be the match referee.

While, Steve Davies of Australia and Pakistan’s Aleem Dar will be the on-field umpires while Marais Erasmus of South Africa and West Indies’ Billy Doctrove have been chosen as the third and fourth umpire.

England’s Chris Broad will be the match referee, during the match to be played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on March 29.

The stage is all set for what is being termed as ‘the final before the final’ as Team India sets up a clash with perennial rivals Pakistan in the semi-final of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011, after scoring a hard-fought victory over four-time winners and defending champions Australia in Ahmedabad on Thursday. City residents burst crackers to celebrate the win.

The semifinal clash would see hosts, India, and their neighbours, Pakistan, battle against each other on March 30 at Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium in Mohali.

Tickets for the near-28,000 capacity stadium were sold out in a record day-and-a-half, with PCA officials claiming that 16,500 tickets were sold and the remainder were sold to ICC, who in turn would be issuing tickets to its guests and officials.

India and Pakistan have played each other four times in past world cups and each time India has emerged victorious against their fiercest rivals. Proceedings in the matches themselves have been nothing short of hugely entertaining and even now images of the clash in 1996 when Pakistani opener Aamir Sohail carted two successive boundaries off Venkatesh Prasad, showing him the bat and then Prasad clean bowling him off the very next delivery still come to mind.

The 2003-edition clash between India and Pakistan saw the current opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag wreak havoc on the Pakistani pace attack as they thoroughly dismantled them hitting 53 runs in the opening five overs. The image of Sachin majestically lifting a Shoaib Akhtar-delivery over the ropes and following up with two hits to the boundary in the first over itself still lingers fresh in fans’ minds.

So, in what could well be the last time Sachin, the greatest cricketer of all time, wields his mighty bat against Pakistani bowling, the semifinal is being viewed as the maestro’s swansong and his last chance to add the only piece of silverware missing from the mantle in his display board, that of being a world champion.

For a country which follows cricket like a religion, the gratification received by having put one over their adversaries on the march to the final in Mumbai on April 2 would be a great joy for every Team India fans.
